Typical cost in Hillsboro

  • One bathroom or laundry floor, about 50 to 100 sq ft$1,000 – $2,500+
  • One kitchen or large room, about 150 to 300 sq ft$1,500 – $4,200+
  • Several rooms, about 500 to 1,000 sq ft$3,300 – $10,000+

An old floor can hide more than one layer: tile under sheet vinyl, adhesive under both, carpet on top. We sample each layer your new floor will disturb, then lift the vinyl tile, mastic and sheet vinyl that test positive.

A kitchen with both can need two notices, since DEQ calls intact vinyl floor tile nonfriable and sheet vinyl friable. We take floor jobs in Hillsboro, Forest Grove and Cornelius.

Flooring we remove

Vinyl floor tile

Both 9-inch and 12-inch vinyl tiles can contain asbestos. Kept intact, they count as nonfriable: we wet them, pry them up whole with a wide scraper and never sand, saw, grind or chip them. DEQ needs the nonfriable notice five days before work starts.

Sheet vinyl

DEQ considers sheet vinyl with an asbestos backing friable in every case. That means a licensed abatement contractor, a negative pressure enclosure and a notice 10 days ahead.

Black mastic and other adhesives

The glue under old tile is its own material and gets its own lab result. Knowing what it is before the tile comes up keeps the plan from changing halfway through.

Before the floor comes up

Layered floors

Oregon labs report each layer separately, so a floor with three layers can come back with three different answers. We plan the removal around the layers that test positive.

Partial remodels

A partial renovation, such as a kitchen remodel, needs a survey of that area only. The layers under the floor you are replacing are sampled.

Floor debris

Debris from a pre-2004 home needs a survey report or lab results before a Metro transfer station will take it, so the floor’s results help with the cleanup too.
